The braking mechanism that limits the speed of the wind turbine broke during a storm in Denmark. This was the outcome. 02/22-2008. http://jp.dk/uknews/article127... info:-The tower of the mill was 60m high-Wind speed was probably around 30 m/s-You can see a truck at the base of the mill, but nobody was hurt. The mill had been evacuated 400m in each direction.Vote Elgaard-Collins '08!!

I seen this one on tv. They said the brakes on it were gone so it had no control. thus it became unsteady, hit its self tor a blade off and set the rest in play.

yeah... and how did that happen

i'm pretty sure wind turbines have an auto shutoff when the wind speeds are too high. The shut off on this one obviously wasn't working properly.

It decreases efficiency and dramatically increases the cost per kWh generated. If you make a turbine with a diameter of 1 m instead of 100 m, the power decreases 10 000 times. Smaller efficiency of the little generator would reduce it even more. It's very uneconomical and looks terrible.

A fine example of why we need to make smaller units more focused to 'individual' usage.

dang... how much do those things cost???

Shit, that could blow up my LCD TV!

There are several yaw drives that would turn the blades and/or nacelle in the best direction, but these things sometimes fail. I don't know enough detail about this particular unit, but I assume its comparatively old. Probably had prototype automatic controls. I just can't be for sure. Would likely be best to find out from someone directly involved in this incident.

Is there no adjustment of the blade shearing angle on these then? A brake sounds like a waste
