You are right of course. He is mentioned a couple of times and actually it's quite fitting when all is said and done. It really shows that during childhood, someone can go completely unnoticed. It's also fitting how the rumor about Sadakiyo also applied to him. He was more of a copy of Sadakiyo than Friend when it came down to it.

If you really paid attention to every detail, you kind of know who he is. His name was mentioned once or twice in 20th Century Boys during the random flashbacks to Kenji and groups' childhood.

You find out his name but not who he is. But really you don't need to know. All the information you need to know about his is shown. Whether you see his face or not isn't really important. I really like the way Urasawa did that. The man really is a genius mangaka.
