Most R12 systems need to have at least 40-45 psi.low side while the AC pump is running.. I do sell DYI kits for your car..visit my ebay store and take a look..RC

Is 40 something pounds normal for an old r12 system, I have one but where I am no one will touch it so it looks like I will have to do a DIY refill, I dont think I have leaks, just old age, but was going to test with air, and check pressure a week later to see if it did leak, just was not sure of what a 'normal; static pressure was

You are correct...Adding oil and repairing leaks are important.Use green UV dye to find leaks..

One important bit of information is if your low on freon you have a leak, if you have a leak not only do you lose freon but you lose oil, lack of proper lubrication is a quick way to destroy a compressor. Leak needs to be found and fixed and proper amount of freon and oil needs to be added back to the system.
