Until Apollo was announced on May 25, 1961 by Kennedythere was no space race. All such statements came from newspeople and politicians who misused their positions.While some people on both sides recognized the propagandavalue of first time events ther was no official space raceuntil Apollo.

Yeah, she died of heat exhaustion 5 hours after entering orbit. None the less, Soviets beat US in every aspect of the space race with the exception of the moon.
