I remember once at one of my choir concerts in high school. I was in one of the higher up choirs, and one of the lower, mostly-freshman (oddly, all female) choirs did this song. almost all of the girls were just back up singers, but this one girl with a deep alto did an impressively close rendition of this. nothing like Ray, but so wonderful I had to applaud and compliment her the next time I saw her.

It was a travesty at the opening ceremony of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta when they didn't have Ray Charles, a Georgia native, sing Georgia on my Mind. Instead it was sung by Gladys Knight. Why? Because the biggest sponsor of those Olympics was Coca Cola and Ray Charles was a spokesman for Pepsi.
