Phenomenal. It really IS possible to solder those little buggers by hand! Thank you for such excellent advice, especially on the use of a hoof tip.

Greetings. For Leadless Chip Carriers, QFN (Quad Fine Pitch-No Lead), QFPN, QFN-EP, DFN, including those with bottom terminal pads:Do not attempt to solder by vertical or horizontal drag soldering. The proper technique is to use a good solder paste by Kester or Amtech. I use No Clean 63/37 (use the real fine creamy stuff)in a syringe. Applywith a small BGA pallet knife/scraper on board pads. Use hot air. How else can one do the bottom terminal pad? Watch side and end overhang (orientation)!

Thank you for sharing such good techniques.Does it work with shorter lead packages like PLCC or even no-lead packages like TDFN or QFN ?Do you think a solder mask is required to prevent bridging or just the flux will do it ? (for PCBs etched at home)BTW for those who don't know where to buy flux, search Google for 'Kester 951' and find Digi-key selling a flux pen

You are referring to "bridging." Please view my other demos and comments and many questions will be answered. Hoof tip, low solid liquid flux, 63/37 tin/lead solder, tip temp of 600-625, "tin" your tip frequently to prevent oxidation. An oxidized tip resists solder and will not allow you to achieve "wetting." A tinned tip promotes thermal transfer. Solder will not adhere to an oxidized surface.

How you keep the solder from flowing together over the IC legs?

What a nice clean job amazing!HEY WERE CAN I BUY FLUX OVER THE INTERNET?

I have used Pace, Metcal, Weller, Hakko and JBC. JBC has the best quality, performance and comfort in their hand pieces. The quality of their rework tips are unbelievable. I achieve my best results using different size hoof tips (single flats) with an angle on the tip. JBC also has some incredible miniwave tips. Subscribe to my videos. New ones are coming out shortly. All kinds of SMT with JBC equipment and its going to blow minds! Take care.

What solder equipment do you use? Strictly PACE? What models?Nice job. I'd love to have you as a teacher some day!

The liquid is Kester 951 No Clean Low Solid Liquid Flux, 2% solids. I use it with Kester 245 No Clean solder, 63/37 tin/lead with a size 66 flux core. I Stay away from the heavily activated rosin. The 951 makes a big difference. |
