To be quite honest, there IS a difference between "big city friendly" and the sort which is found in more rural areas, seemingly especially in the Maritimes.... but on the whole the dictum holds: if you treat folks properly, it does indeed come back to you, sometimes in ways and at times you don;t expect it to - not in a "karma"-related manner (which i don't believe in), but i've visited a lot of places and have found that good will is repaid - that's the Way of the World, period.

sorry I am from cape breton and I would have to disagree.I live in Toronto now and there is a HUGE difference between the people. I smiled and was nice and tried hard not to change my friendly disposition I gave respect out to everyone because it's part of my up bringing I never knew how to be disrespectful to a person until I had to live here. I still try to maintain my cape breton friendliness but I have to say it is hard. For the record I was considered overly friendly in Cape Breton.

Yes - even in Toronto LOL!! I've spent many a day in Toronto and other major cities reputed to be cold and indifferent, and have found that for the most part one gets back what one gives out. Treat folks with respect and over 90% of the time, that's the way you'll be treated yourself. This the way the world actually works.

That is not true. There are some places that are more assholish than others.
