I dont know if a mesh would work, because if you picture a bird going at 200-600mph and coming into contact with an aircraft the mesh would grate it like a cheese grator and it would still go into the engine, hitting the turbine. i suppose you could argue it would be in smaller parts and that might help. I suppose they could deflect the bird from the inlet by slanted shutters that lets air in, but deflect and object, but most air would have to go into engine, so it might still get sucked in.

seems an attractive thing to do: of course problem then is when countries like russia start flying their aircraft over your country and pushing you around and you havent got the technology to see them off. but free health care is important. Its never perfect, but the NHS works (apart from dentistry).
