To correct you, I have read the play, it's not a book, and I have seen the movie as well, last spring to be more accurate. She got sick at 19 months, I doubt at that age she knew "wa wa, ma or daddy." They make small sounds yes, but not words, why are we even having this discussion!? sorry, just end it?

I just realized you can see the rest of the scene and the final scene of the movie in Related Videos ("Why my nickname is Wa Part 2", by the same poster). The music in these scenes (Elmer Bernstein?) also adds to why I blubber so much!

cazia9, I am the same way with "She knows!". This movie, and the book inspired a generation of Special Ed. teachers such as myself. An extra bit of poignancy, and I think it is mentioned in the script of the play, is Mrs. Keller realized that at the moment she got her daughter "back",she also lost her forever to her "Teacher". You see a bit of this further into the scene than is shown here, when Helen goes back over to Anne Sullivan. A wonderful movie about remarkable people.

Why don't you read the book or watch the movie? Then you'd understand.Babies do make small sounds. Some babies even say short words, like wa wa, or ma ma and daddy, as was the case with Helen Keller.

She got sick when she was a baby, before she could even talk.

She had started talking before she got sick. Water, or Wawa was one of the first words she said. She remembered it then when the water touched her hands.
